What You Need To Know About Vitamin C – Part 1

Vitamin C is also known as ascorbic acid. As an antioxidant it prevents and repairs damage done to our cells by free radicals.

As it is needed for the synthesis of collagen (a protein present in bones, cartilage, ligaments, tendons, teeth, and gums) it is absolutely necessary for a healthy bone structure.

Many studies and research papers over the last thirty years have found that vitamin C, has many beneficial aspects that are reflected in a healthier immune system, in healing of scratches and wounds, for skin cell damage and therefore anti-aging.

A brief mention of some vitamin c benefits would have to include:

  • that it lowers the risk of cancer because the immune system is in a better position to fight against tumor cells.
  • that it is a powerful antioxidant (by combating free radicals) and helpful against heart disease. One study reported that patients with normal or high levels of vitamin c had better chances of surviving heart problems. Another (1992) indicated that people with high levels of vitamin c in their system lived six years longer, on average, than those who don’t.
  • it helps absorb iron and calcium.
  • it helps the nervous system by converting certain amino acids into neurotransmitters (are critical to brain function and are known to affect mood).
  • it has been shown to prevent symptoms on the respiratory track.
  • indications are that it helps with prevention of Alzheimer’s.
  • it is beneficial for coronary heart disease
